Phil Galfond founded Run It Once Poker with the goal of keeping the online poker dream alive. Over the years, a big part of that dream has been epic high stakes battles for all to witness. With the Galfond Challenge, a series of high stakes heads up matches between Phil and his various challengers, Phil is bringing back the glory days of. Phil Galfond (born January 16, 1985) is an American professional poker player. Galfond won three World Series of Poker bracelets, in the $5,000 buy-in pot-limit Omaha with rebuys event in 2008, the $10,000 no-limit 2-7 single draw championship in 2015 and the $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship in 2018.

Bill Perkins has offered Daniel Negreanu 10 to 1 odds on beating Doug Polk, the long odds an “incentive” for Kid Poker to win the highly-anticipated grudge match that kicks off this week.

Player

Perkins has been taking a keen interest in the match, revealing last week that he had already booked $1million in sidebets, half of that with Polk himself.

The multi-millionaire who made his money as a hedge fund manager tweeted:

“Have about 1MM so far booked on @RealKidPoker vs @DougPolkVids HU poker battle. With about 500k booked directly w/ the HU Master D Polk himself. I think Doug is a fav but trust Dnegs has been studying w/ the #HybridPoker wizards & their accelerated learning tool so better than 4/1.”

That 4-1 price on Negreanu is what Phil Hellmuth and Mike Matusow got last week when they placed a total of $25k on Negreanu, although for Mike it included his entire bankroll of $10k.

The ‘Grudge Match of the Century’ between Negreanu and Polk took quite some time to arrange, although the rules have now been set as we explained recently…

  • Rule #1: Online NLHE $200/$400 across two tables simultaneously
  • Rule #2: Play will take place on WSOP.com, each player loading $1million onto the site.
  • Rule #3: Match will consist of 25,000 hands, losing player at halfway point allowed to buy out.
  • Rule #4: Preflop charts, HUDs and hand trackers are not allowed.
  • Rule #5: Hole cards will be shown for a portion of the match only at the PokerGo studio.

Interest in the battle has of course been huge, with Fedor Holz still looking for some action on Negreanu at 4.5-1, while Jonathan Little thinks Negreanu is well worth a bet at those odds.

Little tweeted out:

“I think most people are not aware of how Negreanu has substantially improved his skills in various games in short periods of time in the past (especially 6-max NL). I bet Negreanu at 5:1 presuming Doug was one of the best at HUNL. Seems like a reasonable value bet to me.”

DNegs himself has apparently been struggling in his warm-up sessions…

…while Polk has peppered his timeline in recent weeks with tales of his pre-match prep, and he revealed the exact figures

“My results since getting back to playing:
- 25/50 and under: +$165,055.94
- 50/100: +$85,760.59
- 100/200 ACR: +$70,102.42
- 100/200 WSOP: -$366,955.90
- Total: -$46,036, Up 30 buyins
[ ] Doing it right.”

The match is due to kick off this Wednesday, November 4th.

High stakes pro Phil Galfond, founder of Run It Once Poker is getting challenged yet again in his Galfond Challange series. This time it’s the controversial former hedge fund manager Bill Perkins who is trying his luck in this wild high stakes game. The Challenge is played at €100/€200 PLO over a total of 50,000 hands or until either one of the players has lost a total of €400,000. Clearly these mind blowing stakes were not enough for the gamblners, seeing as they also agreed on a massive side bet where Galfond needs to pay up $1,000,000 if ending as the loser. Perkins on the other hand, gets a bit of a handicap with only having to put up $250,000 if he finishes last of the two.

The match will be played out over at partypoker but the exact date and time is yet to be announced.

Bill Perkins was born in New Jersey back in 1969 and had a very succesful carrier as a hedge fund manager before entering the poker scene. While Perkins should be considered the clear underdog in the match, he is far from an amateur. Last year Bill managed his way all the way to the 6th place in Triton Million for Charity event in London, cashing in a a total of £2,200,000.

Perkins said: “All my life I’ve been attacking challenging situations and this one seems to be the most formidable in quite some time. Not only does Phil have strategic knowledge, he has heart and mental fortitude. I look forward to playing the role of underdog.

The Galfond Challange

The side action and stoploss for the Galfond Challange differs depending on the opponent that Phil Galfond is facing. The stakes however have been the same in both the previous challange as well as the upcoming announced ones. In his opening match, Phil took on “Venividi1993” in a real roller coaster game. Phil, who at one point saw himself down over €900,000 ended up ahead to secure a tidy €1,472.08. Seeing as the side action for this match was €200,000 vs €100,000, its safe to say the extra €100,000 made it worth Phils time in the end.

Galfond said: “This challenge is different to my others because of the $400,000 finish line. A lot of people are expecting me to win this one, but they shouldn’t underestimate Bill or the swings of PLO. Anything can happen.”
